QUESTION 64

How does the Holy Spirit bring us to salvation?

ANSWER

He uses the Bible, which is the Word of God.

Way back in question #5, we learned that God is a Trinity. He’s one God, yet he exists in three persons. As we look at the big story of the Bible, we can see all three of these Persons work together as a team to bring us salvation, which means being saved from our sins.

God the Father loved the world so much that he sent his Son to save us. Jesus the Son paid the price for our sin by dying on the cross. And God the Holy Spirit raises our dead-in-sin spirits to life so that we can believe the good news.

But the Holy Spirit doesn’t just raise our dead spirits to life out of the blue. There’s something he chooses to use to transform us from law-breaking sinners into believing children of God. And that thing is the Word of God!

God's Words are incredibly powerful. Way back in the beginning, we learned that God created all we see using just the power of his words. When God’s Son Jesus performed amazing signs and wonders, he simply spoke and miracles happened! Isaiah 55:11 describes God’s Word this way: “So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” When God speaks, things always happen!

When it comes to bringing dead sinners to life, there’s a specific set of God’s Words that the Holy Spirit uses to bring us to salvation. Romans 10:17 explains, “Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.” To give us the faith to believe and be saved, the Holy Spirit uses the words of the gospel: the good news that Jesus the Christ died for our sins and rose from the dead.

Now, God is the one who does all the work in saving us. However, he lets us play a part in the process. He uses us to bring people into his kingdom, sort of how a master musician uses their instrument to make a beautiful sound! Our part in the process is to share the good news of Jesus with those who don’t believe. When we speak God's Words about what Jesus did to save us, God the Holy Spirit then uses those words to bring dead spirits to life and sinners into God’s kingdom!
